I remember going through my explore page on Instagram and constantly seeing people post glass coasters in the shape of the Barbados one dollar coin. As I watched more people's stories I continued to see these coasters. I had to find out who did these amazing pieces that EVERYONE was raving about!
Bespoke means "made specially ordered". The studio is owned and run by Karla Nicholls- one of the amazing talents here in Barbados! She makes her art by using a razor cutter, and is then able to create her unique digitally fabricated pieces.
As I sat down with Karla to find out more about her work, she explained to me that she first used the machinery at Architecture School in Canada and realised how important and handy a razor cutting machine could be. So Karla made the decision to bring her digital fabrication skills back home and started Bespoke Studio. Although there are other people who do digital fabrication on island, no one does what Karla does, and that is what makes her stand out so well!
Along with coasters, Karla also makes light fixtures, wall art, mouse pads, Barbados maps,
keyrings and customisable brand pieces for many clients. In her newer projects she would like to start making jewellery, and even make some Christmas ornaments! In order to be as eco-friendly as possible Karla sources wood from local providers to make her art. This not only helps the environment, but it also helps to preserve the life of her machine. She explained, that plastic will not only jam the machine over time, but it is not always environmentally friendly or cost effective- as the plastic would have to be shipped in from over-seas.
In order to keep the pieces safe from termites and to waterproof them, Karla applies a sealant on all of her pieces. That way, even if you are located close to the beach, the sea breeze will not harm or damage your pieces in any way. You can find some of her coasters in the gift shop at the Animal Flower Cave or at a local retail store called "My Collection".
Getting into contact with Karla is very easy and she replies quickly guys! You can find her on Instagram @bespokebarbados, on Facebook at Bespoke Barbados or you can send her a message at 1-246-236-4442 for any questions or orders!
